The coral reef in front of Tulum is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (MBRS), which is the second-largest coral reef in the world, after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. This reef system stretches approximately 1,000 kilometers along the Caribbean coasts of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize. The reef begins at Isla Contoy on the Yucatán Peninsula and extends southward, passing the coasts of Belize and Guatemala, ending near the Bay Islands of Honduras .

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is a crucial habitat for over 60 species of stony corals, nearly 400 species of mollusks, more than 500 species of fish, and several endangered species, such as sea turtles. It also houses one of the largest populations of manatees in the world and the whale shark, the largest fish on the planet .

The restoration techniques developed by Oceanus for the Restoration Program include the construction of coral nurseries and the transplantation of thousands of colonies a year.
